Obituary for Margarethe Killmer

It is with great sadness that the family of Margarethe Killmer announces her passing on April 5, 2017 after a brief illness at the age of 80. Margarethe, a long-time resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, was born September 21, 1936 in Opava, the Czech Republic, and spent her younger years in Brilon in the North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. She moved to Brooklyn, NY in 1960 to be with her mother and siblings and then on to Poughkeepsie in 1962. She married Clarence “Babe” Killmer in 1970, who predeceased her on April 9, 1990.
Margarethe was educated in Germany in the Butcher trade and retired from Karl Ehmer Pork Stores where she worked for over 35 years. She was actively involved with Germania of Poughkeepsie, where she was recently honored as a fifty year member. As a member of the club she had participated in the Germania Singing Society, the Almrausch Schuhplattler Verein and most recently as the coordinator of all aspects related to running the club’s kitchen. Margarethe enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes, embroidery and reading romance novels. She was a compassionate and loyal person who laughed easily, had much to offer and was a great support to her family. She was a deep thinker who assessed situations with compassion.
Margarethe is lovingly remembered by her stepson, Michael Killmer, whom she dearly loved and respected and played an integral part in his life. Michael, along with his wife, Patricia, and their children Ashley Samantha, Lance and Justin, were never far from Margarethe’s mind. Margarethe will be sorely missed by her sister and best friend, Monica Jorgensen, along with Monica’s husband John and their daughters Annemarie Maini and her husband Harpal and Jennifer Jorgensen and her husband Douglas Moffitt. Margarethe brought abundant joy to her grandnieces and grandnephews Dilsher, Sumer, Nicholas, Emma and Maya.
Margarethe is also survived by her stepdaughters Kim (John) Hadley and Candace (James) Kehayes along with their children Katie, Alyssa, Taylor, Camryn and Michael. She is also survived by her two brothers, Horst Nanke and his son Steve and Rudolph Nanke and his daughters Erika and Karen. Margarethe was predeceased by her parents Walter Nanke and Marie Hajtman-Nanke.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at St. Martin de Porres Parish, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie at 9:30am on Saturday, April 8, 2017 followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 60 Evergreen Avenue, Poughkeepsie.
In the spirit of Margarethe’s generosity and kind heart and in lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who knew her to offer a meal to someone in need, extend a hand to a neighbor or make a gift to Meals on Wheels of Greater Poughkeepsie or Germania of Poughkeepsie.
