Obituary for Winifred S. "Winnie" Hoffnagle
Winifred “Winnie” Sherman Hoffnagle, a resident of Poughkeepsie for over 50 years…
She was born in Milford, Pennsylvania, February 13, 1926, daughter of James and Ella Sherman. Winnie graduated from Milford High School at the end of WWII. She attended Rider College in Trenton, New Jersey where she met and married Philip Hoffnagle from Westport, New York.
They remained in Trenton for a few years before moving to Hamlin, New York. They had five children. They later moved to Phil’s family home in Westport where they spent several years raising their family. While there, Winnie was a proud member of the Eastern Star. She worked for NYS Division of Veterans Affairs in Elizabethtown.
The family relocated to Poughkeepsie in 1964. Winnie worked as a legal secretary for two law firms over the next 30 or so years, until she retired at 70. She developed many enduring relationships with friends and colleagues over the years.
She enjoyed gardening, reading and loved her cats. She also developed a taste for travelling. She loved photos and spent many hours scrapbooking, continuing with that hobby through the rest of her life.
Winnie spent the last years of her life at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck, where she enjoyed friends, activities and caring assistance from the staff.
Her main passion was her family. She was very proud of all her children and their accomplishments. She was preceded in death by her husband Philip, daughter Barbara Harris and granddaughter Tina Paganelli. She is survived by her daughter Linda Wallis and son-in-law Peter from Whangarei, New Zealand, her son Philip R. (Bob) Hoffnagle and daughter-in-law Rosary of Staatsburg, son Keith Hoffnagle and daughter-in-law Debra of Poughkeepsie and daughter Kathryn Falin also of Poughkeepsie. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Visitation is Monday, august 14, 2017 10AM-11AM in the Funeral Home. Services are at 11 AM in the Funeral Home and burial will follow in the family plot in Union Cemetery in Hyde Park, NY.
