Abe Marinoff, 98, of the City of Poughkeepsie, NY died at home on Monday, October 23, 2017. Born in the Bronx on November 8th, 1918, he was the son of Harry and Rose Chumsky Marinoff who had emigrated to the US after escaping persecution in Russia.
As a young man Abe joined the YPSL’s to fight for worker and civil rights, a cause he supported his entire life. He spent several of his formative years in Bridgeport, Connecticut where he made lifelong friends who came to be known as the “Trumbaniks”.
Returning to NYC, he attended DeWitt Clinton High School and CCNY where he graduated with a business degree. He served honorably throughout World War II, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. During the war he married his hometown sweetheart, Bertha Kulchinsky who was also serving the war effort. They were married for 68 years.
After the war, Abe and his younger brother Bill worked together in several small businesses, including a dry cleaning store on Long Island and a luncheonette outside Belmont Racetrack. In 1964 he accepted an offer to co-run Valetor Cleaners and he and Bertha moved with their 3 children to Poughkeepsie.
Abe was a member of the Jewish War Veterans Herman Siegel Post 625. He and Bertha were avid attendees of senior exercise programs and Lunch and Learn at the JCC. Bertha died in 2011. Abe is also predeceased by his sister Edna Marinoff Baruch and his first born son Philip. He is survived by his brother Bill of LA, his daughter Judy of Toronto, his son Mark of Poughkeepsie and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren and cousins.
