Obituary for Wanda Lou Glasse

Wanda Lou (Lou) Glasse, 90, formerly of Poughkeepsie and New Paltz, New York, died peacefully in her sleep on October 26, 2017 in Driftwood, Texas due to complications from progressive dementia. Born on April 18, 1927 in Marlow, Oklahoma, Lou was the youngest of four children born to John and Elsie Howard and is predeceased by her brothers Robert, Julian, and Don. Lou married the Rev. John H. Glasse, Ph.D. in 1950 and shared 64 years of marriage until his death in August, 2014.

Having graduated with a B.A. from University of Oklahoma and a M.S.W. from University of Connecticut in 1952, Lou enjoyed a professional career dedicated to social work, advocacy, and issues of the aging. She served as the first Director of the Dutchess County Office for the Aging, and Director for the New York State Office for the Aging (1976-83). She also served as President of the Older Women’s League (OWL) from 1986-94 and the State Units on Aging from 1979-81. She chaired the New York delegation to the 1981 White House Conference on Aging, chaired the Steering Committee on Income Security for the 1995 White House Conference on Aging, and participated in the 1998 White House Conference on Social Security.

Lou was a longtime member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Poughkeepsie and a member of the Hudson River Presbytery.

Lou loved spending time with family, her homes on Vassar College campus and Lake Sacandaga, and dancing.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeff and Paul, their wives, Linda and Polly, respectively, and four grandchildren, Lauren, Trevor, Marielle, and Julien.

There are no calling hours. There will be a Graveside Service on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 12:00noon at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the William G.
