Sr. and Winifred Cecilia White Gabel. He is survived by his loyal and devoted wife Frances P. Gabel. His beloved "Franny" was a "saint" in the final years. They were married June 26 1948…almost made it to 70 years!

The son of a New York City policeman and a Mother who was a community activist in their neighborhood. He served with the Navy Seabees as a commissioned civil engineer during World War II (1942-1945) and the Korean War (1951-1953). He was with the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions in the Pacific, landing at Nagasaki, not long after the Atom Bomb was dropped on that city. He served in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a commander in 1968.

He was a graduate of Manhattan Prep and attended Columbia University receiving a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Manhattan College in 1945. He credited his older sister Winifred for instilling in him the value of pursuing higher education.

He was a proud member of Dutchess Golf and CC for 50 years (1966-2016) and served on the board of directors for some of those years. His love of golf and his beloved Dutchess Golf Club, was influential to many of the Gabel family that follows.

Edward epitomized the “Greatest Generation”. He could make or fix almost anything. He was so proud of his house and yard in Red Oaks Mill, from 1953 until today. Fondly called “The Big E” in his retirement years, he will be remembered for his generosity, optimism, “gift of gab”, love for family, friends, and country.
