Mary Jane Lutz
Mary Jane Lutz passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 16, 2017 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born on March 12, 1931, the daughter of Charles and Grace Jones Birchall. She attended St. Mary’s Poughkeepsie Elementary school and Arlington High School. She later went on to graduate from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in NYC. She was a pediatric RN at St. Francis Hospital caring for many children throughout the years – as well as her own!! She was a volunteer at St. Mary’s School, Wappingers Falls, Meals-on-Wheels and Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Mary Jane married Allen Lutz at St. Stanislaus Church in Pleasant Valley on November 14, 1953. They had a wonderful life together in Wappingers Falls raising their 9 children. They took many family vacations to the Jersey Shore. Mary Jane’s deep faith in God and love and devotion to her family will remain an inspiration to all who knew her. She was always available to babysit her grandchildren and enjoyed family weekends at the Eck Road pool as well as the many holiday gatherings with endless food, drink and great times. On retirement Mary Jane and Allen enjoyed their time in Barefoot Bay, FL. They spent their time traveling together with friends and family until Allen’s death in 2002. Mary Jane continued to live in FL where she remained active in the Red Hat Club, Barefoot Bay Women’s Golf league and volunteered at the local women’s fire auxiliary. She also enjoyed working on crossword puzzles which she claimed was to keep her mind sharp, although she did them in pencil and looked at the answers!! Her family knew never to call her after 5pm, her favorite time of day, when she enjoyed her Manhattan and watching the nightly news.
She is survived by her sister Charlene (Patrick) Gannon and her sister-in-law Shirley Lutz as well as her children – Maureen (Bill) Lyons, Kathy Hendrickson, Shirley (Jim) Irwin, Cindy (Dave) McDonald, Allen (Holly) Lutz, Mary Ellen (CJ) Bruno, Jeanine (Kevin) McManus, Matthew (Stacey) Lutz and Teresa (Marc) Pfalzgraf. She was known as MeMa or Meems by her 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her sister, Dorothy McAllister and her granddaughter Stefani Hendrickson.
