Obituary for Michael G. Gartland

Michael G. Gartland died April 20, 2018 of complications from cancer, at Vassar Brothers Hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends. Mike was born on July 7, 1947, the son of John G Gartland, Jr. and Catherine Corbally Gartland. He was a 1965 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School and a member of their founding football team. He graduated from Fairfield University in 1969. He then served in the National Guard and graduated from Albany Law School in 1973. Mike joined the law firm of Corbally, Gartland & Rappleyea, LLP in 1973, and was made partner in 1979, specializing in banking and real estate law. His practice continues through his partner and son Patrick Gartland, who is the fourth generation of their family to be a partner at CGR. Mike also served as a Trustee of the James J. McCann Charitable Trust, the McCann Foundation, Inc. and the Charlotte Cunneen-Hackett Charitable Trust. Through his stewardship, numerous civic projects have benefited from these legacies including the Bardavon Theater, Marist College, the McCann Memorial Golf Course, Our Lady of Lourdes High School, and the Culinary Institute of America. Innumerable Dutchess County residents have benefited from scholarship programs, recreational opportunities and spiritual programming that were made possible by support received from the Foundation and the Trusts. He was also on the Board of Trustees at Marist College, was a former member and Vice Chairman of the City of Poughkeepsie Planning Board, and was a former member and Chairman of the Dutchess County Resources Recovery Agency.

In 1970, Mike married the love of his life, Pamela Lemak Gartland, who survives at home. He is also survived by his son Patrick and daughter-in-law Brooke Gentile of Poughkeepsie; his son Gregory and daughter-in-law Ellen and their children, Calvin and Elsa of Poughkeepsie; and his son Steven and daughter-in-law Abby and their children, Greta and Mallory, of Chicago. To his four grandchildren he was their beloved “Poppo.” Mike is also survived by his uncle and aunt, Richard and Julia Corbally of Poughkeepsie; seven siblings, Catherine, Timothy, Matthew, Christopher, Mary Patricia, Terrence, and Jennifer, and their spouses; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.

Mike and Pam were first introduced by their lifelong friends, John and Sharon Gates, in 1968. Mike and John first met as Cub Scouts at the age of 5, and remained best friends for 65 years, often traveling to remote wilderness locations hunting and fly fishing. In addition to fishing throughout the local area, the Labrador region of Canada, and Montana, Mike enjoyed traveling with Pam, including numerous trips to Chicago and several to Ireland, their mutual ancestral homeland.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christan Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 231 Church St., Poughkeepsie, on Tuesday, April 24 at 10 am and a burial will take place afterward at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michael G. Gartland Memorial Scholarship c/o Our Lady of Lourdes High School, 131 Boardman Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
